Rent anything. Lend anything.

The rental marketplace we built before AI changed how products get built.

Rent4Me was a peer-to-peer rental marketplace built around a simple idea: useful things should spend more time being used and less time sitting unused. We experimented with peer-to-peer rentals, traditional rental businesses, trust, identity verification, delivery, payments, and the broader sharing economy. The original marketplace is now archived, but the story — and many of the ideas behind it — live on.

The original marketplace is no longer operated. This site preserves the project, its story, and what came next.

The idea

An Airbnb for things

Rent4Me started as a marketplace where people could rent and lend everyday items instead of buying things they only needed occasionally. The vision grew into a hybrid marketplace that could support both individual owners and traditional rental businesses.

The product explored problems that are still central to marketplaces today:

  • Trust between strangers
  • Identity & item verification
  • Payments
  • Delivery
  • Insurance
  • Reputation
  • Marketplace liquidity
  • Mobile discovery
  • Matching local supply with local demand

What existed

We actually shipped it

  • Marketplace

Users could discover things available for rent and list their own items.

  • Mobile apps

Rent4Me shipped mobile applications as part of the marketplace experience.

  • P2P + professional rentals

The product explored a hybrid model combining individual owners with rental businesses.

  • Trust

Identity and document moderation and trust mechanisms were part of the product direction.

  • Delivery + payments

The marketplace explored simplifying the logistics around renting, paying, and receiving items.

  • Community

Rent4Me became more than an idea: a team formed around it, developers contributed, users arrived, and the project generated public startup coverage.

Archived, but still part of the journey

The marketplace itself is no longer the focus. The experience of building Rent4Me led to new software products and experiments.

Lessons

What building Rent4Me taught me

  1. Marketplaces are two products

You are building simultaneously for supply and demand. One side without the other has very little value, so every feature has to make sense for owners and renters at the same time.

  2. Trust is a product feature

Payments are not enough. Identity, reputation, insurance, item quality, delivery, and dispute handling define whether a marketplace between strangers is actually usable.

  3. Shipping beats ideation

A startup becomes much more educational once real users can touch it. Assumptions that survived months of planning can change after a single week of real usage.

  4. Distribution matters as much as software

A technically solid marketplace still needs enough local liquidity to become useful. If nothing is available nearby, the quality of the code barely matters to the person searching.

  5. Teams are part of the product

Recruiting, onboarding, coordination, and maintaining momentum are as real as coding. How a team works together shows up directly in what it ships and how fast.

What came next

Rent4Me was one chapter

I continue building products around AI, automation, personal software, and tools that solve problems I want solved myself.

Founder

Built by people who wanted to make renting easier

Alexander Lumen

Software engineer, product builder, and co-founder of Rent4Me.

Rent4Me became one of the projects that shaped how I think about marketplaces, product development, startup teams, mobile products, and building software from an idea into something real.
